What is a DVR?

A digital video recorder (DVR) is an electronic device which encodes, processes and records the feed from analog cameras onto a hard drive, with the date and time stamped as per the parameters set using the video capture hardware. The recorded video can be searched, reviewed and used as evidence of an incident. The DVR lets you set recording resolution, type of recording, video parameters and alarm handling, so the right model can be chosen for your requirement.

DVRs are normally preferred by users who need a security/surveillance system at an optimal cost, meeting their requirement of recording video from cameras as configured. DVRs are used in locations where cabling is not a constraint, and normally support analog cameras only — though Hybrid DVRs are now available that support a combination of ANALOG and IP cameras.
